In the Interpreter of Maladies, the short story, “Interpreter of Maladies,” Mrs. Finally, the last theme for comparison is sacrifice. In comparison, in The House of Sand and Fog, the house (of Kathy Nicolo) that was sought after, was a way for Behrani to strengthen his ties with his family, as it would prove to his family that he was an effective guardian worthy of their kinship (Debus III, pg. For example, in the short story “A Temporary Matter,” the spark off of electricity, allowed for the couple to reconnect, as there was halt in spiritual connection among the two, thus strengthening the family unit. In the Interpreter of Maladies, all the nine short stories, use the connection of family to move through moral/ethical obstacles. Similarly, in The House of Sand and Fog, the main character, Behrani, faces suffering by working in low-end jobs in order to provide a living for his family. The civil war brought a period of suffering, as the narrator states, “Teachers were dragged onto streets and shot, women dragged into barracks and raped,” (Lahiri, pg. Pirzada’s home country, East Pakistan (Now Bangladesh) is in turmoil, as it’s in a civil war. For example, in the short story, “When Mr. This can be seen in the Interpreter of Maladies, as in each short stories, there is a conflict present. Suffering can be present in both texts, as the sequence of main characters in each text face both external and internal obstacles affecting their livelihood through a brief lapse of time. Whether it may be for better or worse, the location plays a significant role in one’s identity. Often times, individuals travel far and long in an attempt to find a home. That means there are no ads, and because it's developed by volunteers, you don't have to pay for any of the features. The exception is Krita, number 5 on our list, which is open source. Indeed, all but one of the apps in our list above have a free version.īe warned, though: most free versions of apps have intrusive ads and you have to upgrade to a paid version if you want to unlock the full feature set. There are many great free drawing apps for Android, including Sketchbook Pro, Infinite Painter and Artflow. Note, though, that it doesn't work with Android phones. This free Android drawing app comes in-app purchases for advanced features. It's better than a real paper pad, though, because you can then digitally share these scribbles with others. This cross-platform app is made by Wacom, creator of the industry leading Wacom tablets, and named after its own Bamboo styluses, but you can use them with other tablets and styluses, too.īamboo Paper essentially turns your Android tablet into the equivalent of a paper notebook, and makes it simple for you to sketch out ideas and concepts, quickly and without fuss. If you're not interested in 'proper' drawing, but just want to scribble, doodle and sketch out ideas on your Android tablet instead, then Bamboo Paper should be your app of choice. While Krita (above) just pips it for value and new tools, Infinite Painter has a simpler UI and is approachable, just like Procreate. Overall, for the fee, this is a high-end and feature-laden drawing app for Android that manages to feel as close to the Procreate experience as you could wish for on a non-Apple device. The app costs $9.99 and while there's no free version, there is a seven-day free trial. You can also record your own drawing as a timelapse, and other features include a lasso fill tool, touch gestures and support for PSDs. There are nearly 200 brushes to choose from, ranging from pencils to charcoals, and you can create your own too. The interface is clean, organised, and highly customisable, and it feels very natural to make marks, providing a superb experience for artists. Looking for an Android alternative to Procreate, the popular iOS app? Then I recommend Infinite Painter, a cross-platform painting, sketching, and drawing app that's available for tablets, phones, and Chromebooks. "Did One of the Old Fruit of the Loom Logos Include a Cornucopia?" Quora. Snopes searched archived newspaper advertisements from every decade from the 1910s to the 2020s and could not locate a single one with a cornucopia:ġ987 Fruit of the Loom "The Unbustables" TV Commercial. The Fruit of the Loom logo has always contained an apple, green grapes, purple grapes, and leaves. The Mandela Effect is real, the cornucopia in our logo is not □ /qoiuvemsIy On June 26, 2023, the company tweeted an image from a USA Today crossword puzzle that included the clue "Fruit of the _ (company that does not, in fact, have a cornucopia in its logo)." They noted that the "Mandela Effect is real" but that the cornucopia claims were false: The company has, as well, officially weighed in on the claim. While the existence of these commercials is factual, one cannot help but note that nobody played a cornucopia in the actual the commercial series referenced in this article: And he had to pretend Fruit of the Looms never found them that were great. "She said (cotton underwear) made me look like an old man." Anyhow, Fruit of the Loom's logo was initially a cornucopia swollen with an apple, green grapes, purple grapes, and their green leaves. "My wife is European," he says from a hotel room in Tampa. And he didn't even wear Fruit of the Looms. For example, a 1994 piece in a local Florida paper about the actor, Samuel Wright, who played Sebastian the Crab in "The Little Mermaid" and who also appeared in Fruit of the Loom commercials, repeated the assertion that the logo contained a cornucopia in print:įor 19 years, Wright made anywhere from 120-140 television commercials for Fruit of the Loom underwear. The perception of a cornucopia goes back decades. However, that is a fabrication, not the actual Fruit of the Loom logo. I think the cornucopia made sense for the Fruit of the Loom brand because it showed that they had a variety of quality products.Īn image of the purported logo is often shared in defense of this claim: A cornucopia is a horn-shaped basket that is filled with fruits and vegetables, and it symbolizes abundance and prosperity. I remember seeing a cornucopia in the logo when I was a kid, and I learned what it was from my school. I have a strong opinion about the Fruit of the Loom logo and whether it had a cornucopia or not. The belief that the Fruit of the Loom logo included a cornucopia is strongly held. In basic terms, the Mandela Effect refers to instances of "collective misremembering" in which large numbers of people share the same false belief. This perception is considered a classic example of the Mandela Effect. If asked to describe underwear manufacturer Fruit of the Loom's logo from memory, some will invariably say it includes - or at least included at some point in time - a horned bowl known as a cornucopia. When I die, don’t come, I wouldn’t want a leaf Lastly, here are some lines from O’Hara’s “ Poem (And tomorrow morning at 8 o’clock in Spingfield, Massachussetts”): The opening pages of Brad Gooch’s City Poet: The Life and Times of Frank O’Hara feature a detailed description of the funeral, and also mention that an early edition of this New York Times article (which I recall I once had a copy of, but now can’t locate) contained “a snide line” about the “many bearded, tieless friends of Mr. Two days later, the New York Times also covered O’Hara’s funeral in an article entitled “200 Pay Tribute to Frank O’Hara.” Among other things, the piece discusses Larry Rivers’s famously shocking and graphic eulogy and John Ashbery’s moving recitation of “To the Harbormaster,” while managing to misspell the names of John Ashbery, Edwin Denby, and David Shapiro. (It also says he was “struck by a taxicab,” which was not in fact the case - he was run over by a dune buggy driven illegally on the beach by a young guy on a date). The obituary discusses his work on the painter Robert Motherwell and the controversy over Larry Rivers’s nude portrait of O’Hara, before turning to mention his poetry. Although it may be hard to believe now, at the time of his sudden death, O’Hara was better known as an art-world figure than a poet. As I always point out to my students, the headline tells you quite a bit about O’Hara’s reputation at the time of his death: “Frank O’Hara, 40, Museum Curator,” with the subheadline “Exhibitions Aide at Modern Art Dies - Also a Poet.” Today, I thought I’d put up a copy of the obituary that ran in the New York Times on July 26, 1966, a document that is not so readily available. Last year at this time, I wrote a post about the wealth of fine elegies for O’Hara that appeared following his death, by poets like Allen Ginsberg, James Schuyler, David Shapiro, Ron Padgett, and others. 48 years ago today, Frank O’Hara died in a tragic accident on Fire Island, New York. Although we wish it came with an attachment to clean large areas of concrete and wood flooring, we appreciate the attachments it does have including those for suds and pressure changes. It continues to come in handy, especially for keeping our house, car, and deck in tip-top shape. The Sun Joe is small but mighty, and it’s perfect for the average homeowner.Īfter testing the Sun Joe SPX3000-MAX for three months, we've found that it is still worthy of our top spot, standing out for its ease of use and powerful, yet compact design. Not to mention, we never felt restricted, thanks to the long length of the power cord and hose. That's an especially handy feature when washing a car.Īlthough this is a somewhat compact pressure washer, we were pleasantly surprised with its power and cleaning ability, which are comparable to that of higher-priced machines. You can store two different types of detergent in the dual chambers, switching between them with the selection dial. This versatile pressure washer can be used for a variety of easy and tough tasks all around the exterior of your home, including cleaning cars and other vehicles, sidewalks and driveways, decks and fences, patio furniture, garden tools, and backyard playsets. Once put together, the pressure washer was very easy to use and maneuvered well on its oversize wheels even across grass or uneven ground. It took us around 15 minutes to assemble the pressure washer, and while the task seemed daunting at first, the instruction manual simplified the procedure. The Sun Joe Pressure Washer features a 20-foot high-pressure hose, a garden hose adapter, a 34-inch extension wand, and a 35-foot power cord. After using this washer on our fence and walkway, we noticed a big improvement in their appearance. Its different nozzles allow for more or less pressure, depending on the surface being cleaned, making it easy to hit the perfect power for each specific job.
